This hotel pumps natural onsen water at a temperature of over 69°C from about 300 meters underground to supply its baths. From the large panoramic bath, guests can see the caldera and lava flows of Mt. Mihara beyond a vast sea of trees. The hotel serves exceptional “camellia cuisine” made with camellia oil, a local specialty.

Guests in wheelchairs can use the mobile wheelchair lift between the first and second floor. The Western-style guest rooms with private onsen baths are wheelchair accessible, and Room 207 has a barrier-free toilet room.

Entire facility

The entrance has a gentle slope with double-rail handrails installed.
The reception staff will come out from behind the counter and assist with check-in so that guests can fill in the guest card using a clipboard.
The staff will help take the guest’s bags to the guest room.
The sofa in the hall is placed so that wheelchair users can also relax with a travel companion.
There are seven steps in the passage to the guest room, but a wheelchair lift is installed.
The hallway carpet is firm enough that a wheelchair can easily move along it.
Guests can have dinner while enjoying deep frying Camellia Fondue at their table themselves.
The windows afford a sweeping view of Mt. Mihara, and guests have breakfast at our restaurant, “Camellia,” which offers the best view.

Guest room (Barrier-free Western-style Room)

This Barrier-free Western-style Room offers a generous 39㎡ of space.
There are two electric adjustable beds whose height can be adjusted to suit the circumstances of the disability, which facilitates getting in and out of bed.
The mattresses disperse body pressure to eliminate strain on numbed skin and prevent bedsores.
There are upper and lower bars for hangers in the closet placed at a height that wheelchair users can also reach.
The refrigerator is at a height that can be readily used by persons in wheelchairs.
The desk in the guest room is wide with 83 cm underneath and stands at a height that enables persons in wheelchairs to readily use it.
The round table can be approached by a wheelchair from any direction for convenience of use.

Bath and toilet (Barrier-free Western-style Room)

The sliding door can be easily opened and closed, and the opening is wide. Electric wheelchairs and wheelchair stretchers can also fit into the washroom and bath.
There is a shower chair in the bath with armrests on both sides.
The height of the showerhead is adjustable.
The washstand counter is at a height that is easy to use even in a wheelchair.

Review from a wheelchair user who stayed at the hotel

I traveled to Oshima from Takeshiba Pier in Tokyo on a Tokai Kisen jetfoil. A mobile wheelchair lift was set up when I boarded, and I was able to smoothly sit down on a seat near the entrance with the assistance of kind staff. At Okata Port in Oshima I disembarked with the help of four experienced staff members. The hotel shuttle bus has steps so I couldn’t take it. I used an accessible taxi from the island (reservation required). The hotel is close to the majestic Mt. Mihara, and in the distance you can see the Pacific Ocean and Mt. Fuji, so the view is excellent. In the entrance a slope and handrails eliminate the steps. The front desk is high, so at check-in a wheelchair user can’t fill in the guest card, but staff who realized this courteously carried out the check-in process and hotel explanations. Inside the hotel, everywhere I looked there was a sense of nostalgia for the Showa period and that this hotel has been appreciated for a long time.

There were seven steps along the route to the Barrier-free Western-style Room, but a wheelchair lift has been installed due to barrier-free improvements to the facility. The room is equipped with an intercom so that hotel staff can be called when needed, so I didn’t feel any stress. The renovated Barrier-free Western-style Room measures 39㎡ and is comfortably spacious. The photos decorating the walls depicting Oshima create a stylish atmosphere. The two electric adjustable beds can be adjusted for ease of use, so I felt peace of mind. The furniture, including chairs, the desk, the refrigerator, and closet, were also built in consideration of wheelchair users. The bath and toilet are a modular unit, but inside the bathroom can be separated by three sliding doors, all with enough space for a wheelchair to be used. The bath is roomy enough that you would never think it’s a modular bath. The washstand, toilet, and handrails have all been placed for convenience. One side of the bathtub has an opening so that if you use the handrail installed on the wall, you can get into the bathtub.

There are two places with a 5-cm difference in level at the entrance to the dining area, but staff assisted me. When I sat down, the dishes were set out to make them easy to eat, and I felt a natural, warm welcoming atmosphere. At the breakfast dining area, I was able to see a wonderful view of Mt. Mihara from the window where I was seated, which put me in a great mood. I wasn’t able to enjoy the large onsen bath or the rooftop viewpoint/Mt. Mihara terrace since they have steps, but even so, the kind consideration of the staff and healing hospitality of the island energized me.
