River fishing and "chairing" in Akigawabashi Kasen Park

Tokyo Metropolitan Government is promoting "Nature experience tourism that everyone can enjoy in Tokyo" so that people with disabilities and the elderly can safely enjoy Tokyo's nature. As part of this initiative, we planned a monitor tour to experience river fishing and chairing at Akigawabashi River Park. Unfortunately, the tour was canceled due to bad weather, but we would like to introduce the appeal of river fishing and chairing.

River fishing experience

The appeal of river fishing is that it allows you to experience the beautiful nature of each season. For the monitor tour of this project, we planned to have participants experience river fishing while sitting in outdoor chairs set up in the shallows of the Akigawa River, or in wheelchairs that we had prepared.
Please note that to fish in the river, you will need to purchase a recreational fishing license in advance from the Akigawa Fisheries Cooperative Association.

“Chairing” experience

Chairing is a leisure activity where you take a folding chair or outdoor chair outside and sit wherever you like. It is a portmanteau of "chair" and "-ing" (expressing an action). There is no need for special equipment, and as long as you can set up a chair outdoors, anyone can easily enjoy the outdoors in a park or by a river.
For this tour, the plan was for participants to enjoy nature by sitting in outdoor chairs set up in the shallows of the Akigawa River and dipping their feet in the water.

Akigawabashi Kasen Park

About an hour from the city center, the park is about five minutes' walk from Musashi- Itsukaichi Station on the JR Itsukaichi Line. This is a wonderful natural site of water and greenery. The riverbed of the Akigawa branch of the Tamagawa River is blessed with the clear pristine waters and breathtaking views of the mountains that change with the seasons. In the spring, the area is home to numerous flowers including the cherry blossoms, as well as the shift to spring green, both of which mesmerize the visitor. There is a barbecue area on the Akigawa riverbed, which is a popular spot.In the summer, tourists can also have fun the in the waters of the Akigawa River.

Wheelchair pulling device and amphibious wheelchairs

The riverbed is full of large and small rocks and stones, making it difficult to navigate in a normal wheelchair, but it is possible to approach it by using a wheelchair towing device called "JINRIKI" or an amphibious wheelchair called "MobiChair" or "HIPPOcampe."
