東京から南に約160キロ、白い砂浜と青い海が美しい新島。島で採れる火山岩「コーガ石（抗火石）」は、新島の他にはイタリアのリパリ島でしか採れない貴重な石。「新島ガラス」の美しいオリーブグリーンの色味は、このコーガ石に含まれる成分が高熱で発色したものです。
Niijima, about 160 kilometers south of Tokyo, is a beautiful island with white sandy beaches and blue sea. The volcanic rock "Koga stone" (firebrick stone) is a precious stone that can only be found on the Italian island of Lipari, except for Niijima. The beautiful olive-green color of Niijima Glass is the result of the components contained in the Koga stone, which develop a color when heated at high temperatures.
そんな新島の天然資源の活用と可能性を形にしている新島ガラスアートセンターは、1988年から新島村と新島ガラス協会によって設置・運営されています。新島出身のガラス作家、野田收さんと由美子さんも開設前から関わっており、現在は若手スタッフと一緒に地域文化の育成、産業・観光の活用の役割を担っています。
The Niijima Glass Art Center, which is taking advantage of this natural resource and its potential, has been established and operated by the Village and the Niijima Glass Association since 1988. Glass artists Osamu and Yumiko Noda, who are from the island, have been involved in the center since before it was established, and now, together with younger staff members, they play a role in fostering local culture and utilizing industry and tourism.
また、センター内では、手作りの温かみを感じられるテーブルウェアを中心に、照明具やオブジェなども制作・販売しています。
The center also produces and sells lighting fixtures, objects, and art works, as well as tableware with the warmth of handmade products.
手仕事と新島の自然が融合した唯一無二のガラス製品
今回、新島ガラスアートセンターを運営しているガラス作家の野田收さんと由美子さん夫妻に新島ガラスについてお話を伺い、工房内で実際作業している風景も見せていただきました。
また、建物内の家具なども職人の手仕事のこだわりを感じられるものが多く、野田夫妻の想いが随所に感じられました。
Unique glassware that combines handcraftsmanship and Niijima's nature
We spoke with glass artists Osamu and Yumiko Noda, who run the Niijima Glass Art Center, about Niijima Glass, and were shown how they actually work in their studio.
We also had the opportunity to see the furniture in the building, many of which were handcrafted by artisans, and we could feel the Noda's passion in every aspect of their work.

「新島ガラスは、工芸用のガラスに比べて固く、扱いにくいですが、光沢があり透明感が高く、すり傷等に強い特性があります。その特性のおかげで、新島のサザエをモチーフにした吹きガラスの熱い内壁を一気に突いて形を作る“突き目の器”が産まれました。突き目は新島ガラスだからこそできる技法。そして新島ガラスは物語性も感じることのできるガラスです。」（野田收さん）
Niijima glass is harder and more difficult to handle than craft glass, but it is shiny, highly transparent, and resistant to scratches. Thanks to these characteristics, Niijima's "Tsukime Ware”, which is shaped by poking the hot inner wall of blown glass all at once to create the motif of Niijima's turban shells, was born. The Tsukime technique is only possible with this glass. Niijima glass is also a glass that tells a story. (Osamu Noda)

野田さんの創作の原点となる新島の美しい自然
The beautiful nature of Niijima, which gives inspiration to Noda's creations
ショップに隣接しているガラス工房では、若いスタッフたちとチームプレーで新島ガラスを制作しています。新島ガラスは特産のコーガ石を砕いて、ソーダ灰を加え1400度で溶解して作ります。
取材した日は真夏日。工房内も30度は超えていそうな中で作業されており、その情熱と職人技に脱帽でした。
In the glass studio adjacent to the store, Niijima glass is produced as a team effort with young staff members. The glass is made by crushing Koga stone, a specialty of the island, adding soda ash, and melting it at 1,300 degrees Celsius.
The day of our visit was in the middle of summer. The temperature in the studio was over 30 degrees Celsius, and we took our hats off to the passion and craftsmanship of the workers.
仲の良さやチームワークが大事なのが伝わってきます。

「熱いガラスを扱っていて危険なこともあり、みんなが今どのような作業をしているか、全体的に空気を読みながら、共同作業ができることが大事なので、ガラス職人の中でも社交的でチームワークが基本できる人が多いですね。吹きガラス職人の気質かもしれません。」（野田由美子さん）
"Since we are dealing with hot glass, which can be dangerous, and it is important to be able to work collaboratively while reading the overall atmosphere to see what everyone is doing at the moment, many glassblowers are sociable and have a basic ability for teamwork. また、新島ガラスアートセンターでは、ガラスアートが広く親しまれるように、国内や世界からいろんなアーティストが参加する新島国際ガラスアートフェスティバルなど、国際的に知られる人材育成・交流イベントを継続して開催しています。そしてこのイベントを起点に、他の地域でもガラスのワークショップが波及し、広がっています。
In addition, the Niijima Glass Art Center continues to hold internationally known human resource development and exchange events so that glass art can be widely popularized. These include the Niijima International Glass Art Festival, in which various artists from Japan and around the world participate. These events are the starting point for the spread of glass workshops in other areas of Japan.

And in the museum neighboring the Niijima Glass Art Center, in addition to the island's glass art works, you can see exhibits of works by artists from around the world and feel the various techniques of glass art through their wonderful works.
