東京都目黒区にアトリエ兼ショップを構える「TOKYO MIZUHIKI（東京水引）」は、日本の伝統工芸である水引を、現代の暮らしに取り入れやすい形にデザインするブランドです。
一本の水引と一つの結びから、アクセサリーをはじめ、さまざまな作品が生まれています。

“TOKYO MIZUHIKI”, which maintains an atelier and shop in Meguro City, Tokyo, is a brand that reimagines the traditional Japanese craft of mizuhiki, which translates to—“decorative cords”—, in designs that fit seamlessly into modern lifestyles.
From a single strand of mizuhiki and a single knot, a variety of works are born, starting with accessories.

偶然の出会いから始まった、水引の道

The path of Mizuhiki started from a coincidental encounter.

TOKYO MIZUHIKIを手がけるのは、水引アーティストの中村江美さんです。
もともと中村さんは「ものづくりとは無縁だった」と話します。事務系の仕事を辞めてご主人の仕事を手伝っていたとき、たまたま余っていた水引を目にしたことがきっかけでした。

TOKYO MIZUHIKI is led by mizuhiki artist Ms. Emi Nakamura.
She says she originally had "nothing to do with the craftsmanship trade." The turning point came when she quit her office job to help with her husband's business and had happened to notice some leftover mizuhiki.

2020年ごろから「TOKYO MIZUHIKI」として本格的に活動を再開。
その頃から作風も大きく変化し、「他の人が作っていないもの、水引の価値をもっと高める形で表現したい」という思いで、創作を続けています。

Around 2020, she formally resumed full-scale activities under the name “TOKYO MIZUHIKI”, and her artistic style began to change significantly. She continues creating with the desire to "make things no one else is making and express that in a way that further enhances the value of mizuhiki."

一つの「淡路結び」から生まれる無限の表現

Infinite expressions from a single "Awaji Musubi"

TOKYO MIZUHIKIの作品の中心にあるのが、「淡路結び」です。
中村さんは、一見シンプルに見えるこの結びを基本に、淡路結びの可能性を追求しています。
淡路結び一つでも、二本取りで長く連ねたもの、壁いっぱいに広がるもの、身に着ける小さなアクセサリーなど、その表現の幅は無限に広がります。

At the heart of TOKYO MIZUHIKI's works is the "Awaji musubi" which translates to a form of knot.
Basing her work on this knot, which at first glance appears simple, Nakamura pursues the possibilities of the awaji-musubi.
Even with a single “awaji musubi”, the range of expression expands infinitely—from things linked long using two strands, to things that spread across an entire wall, and small accessories to wear.

水引の色合いも、シックなものから鮮やかなものまでさまざま。同じ淡路結びでも、色の組み合わせによって雰囲気もがらりと変わります。

The color palette of the mizuhiki ranges from sophisticated tones to vibrant hues.
Even with the same “awaji musubi”, the atmosphere changes completely depending on the combination of colors.

「固い絆」を願う結びと、古くからの祈り

Knots that wish for "strong bonds" and ancient prayers

中村さんは、水引の持つ意味も大切にしながら作品づくりを続けています。

「淡路結びは、固く結ばれることから『固い絆』を願う結びです。そういう意味も込めて贈りたいという方も多くて、おめでたい場面で選んでいただいています。」

水引の起源は古く、神様への捧げものとして使われた麻ひもにさかのぼります。
遣隋使の頃から麻ひもが用いられ、その流れが水引の由来になったと言われており、現在でも神前のお供えに当時の名残を見ることができます。

Ms. Nakamura values the meanings embedded in mizuhiki while continuing her work.
"The Awaji musubi is a knot symbolizing “strong bonds” because it firmly. Many people choose it for celebratory occasions, wanting to convey that meaning as a gift."

The origins of mizuhiki is ancient, dating back to hemp cords used as offerings to the gods.
It is said that these cords were used from the time of the Kenzo missions to Sui Dynasty China, forming the basis of mizuhiki, and traces of this tradition can still be seen today in offerings at Shinto shrines.

伝統に根ざした意味や格式を大切にしながら、中村さんが目指すのは、特別な日だけでなく、日々の装いの中で水引の美しさを感じてもらうこと。
「いつも ココロ はずむ」——その想いが、すべての作品に込められています。

While cherishing the meanings and formality rooted in tradition, Ms. Nakamura aims for people to appreciate the beauty of mizuhiki not just on special days, but in their everyday attire.
"Always make your heart leap"—this sentiment is infused into every piece.

目黒のアトリエ兼ショップには、国内外から多くの来訪者が訪れます。

「わざわざ調べて来てくださる方が多くて、タクシーで駆けつけてくれる方も少なくありません。なかでも、欧米やアジア圏からのお客さまが増えており、一番多いのは『日本のものをお土産にあげたい』という方ですね。アメリカ、ヨーロッパ、チェコなど、いろいろな国へのお土産として買ってくださいます。」と中村さん。

また、水引というと繊細なイメージがありますが、24時間水に浸けていても大丈夫な素材もあり、ギフトにも日常使いにも最適。暮らしの中で長く楽しめる「日本のお土産」として、世界へと羽ばたいています。

Many visitors from both inside and outside the country visit the atelier and shop in Meguro.

Though mizuhiki evokes a delicate image when speaking of mizuhiki, some materials can withstand 24 hours immersed in water, making them ideal for gifts or daily use. As "Japanese souvenirs" that can be enjoyed long-term in everyday life, they are spreading worldwide.
