Miyakejima Island, located about 180 km south of central Tokyo, is an active volcano belonging to the Fuji Volcanic Belt.The island has been repeatedly erupting in a 20-year cycle, with the most recent eruption occurring at the summit of Mount Oyama in 2000, and previous eruptions occurring in the Ako district in 1983 and the Tsubota district in 1962.The magnificent volcanic island scenery that can be seen throughout the island is like a natural volcano museum. Ako Fishing Port(Ako Fishing Port Passenger Waiting Room)
Of the three ports of entry and departure on Miyakejima island, this is the passenger waiting area at Sabigahama Port in the southwestern part of the island. The Miyakejima Tourist Association is located on the first floor, and on the second floor there is Miyake Shokudo, a restaurant serving ramen, light meals, and soft drinks, as well as the observation deck terrace.
Accessibility Information
There are no steps at the entrance or exit of the facility or inside the facility, and Braille blocks are laid out along the main flow lines in the waiting area. The embarkation and disembarkation ramps of the Tachibana Maru are stairs, so wheelchair users must be assisted by staff to embark and disembark.

Miike Port(Miike Port Passenger Waiting Room)
Of the three ports of entry and departure on Miyakejima island, this is the passenger waiting area at the Port of Miike in the eastern part of the island. Currently, a temporary waiting area is in use due to reconstruction work.
Accessibility Information

Spot1 Volcano Experience Trail About 30 min.-1 hour
This is a valuable geo-spot where the ruins of Ako Elementary and Junior High Schools, which were buried by lava flows from the 1983 eruption, can be seen as they were at the time of the eruption. There is a 10-minute route around the site and a 20-minute route that leads to the road on the east side. Walking here, you can witness the threat of the eruption and nature's renewal power that sprouted from it.

Spot2 Imazaki coast/Glasses Rock About 30 min.
This is a lava fan-shaped beach stretching 1.5 km from “Meganeiwa” in Ako village to “Yukei Beach”. The lava flow from the 1643 eruption created the present flat surface of Ako village and this beach. On this Imasaki Coast, there is Glasses Rock, which is a sea cave eroded by the waves. There used to be two holes in the rock, like glasses, but one of them collapsed during Typhoon Isewan in 1959, leaving the rock in its present form.

From the flat road along the coast, visitors can enjoy the view of the coast formed by lava flows, but be careful when passing cars as the road is only about 5 m wide and there are no sidewalks.

Spot3 Cape Izu About 30 min.
The cape is marked by an unusual prism-shaped, pure white lighthouse built in 1909. In the surrounding area, geological strata from an older age can be seen, which has helped elucidate the eruption history of Miyakejima over the past 10,000 years. It is also a popular spot for viewing the sunset and starry sky.

Spot4 Sea and Wind Akajari Park 20min
The observatory overlooks Okubo Beach below, the Izu Islands on the horizon, Mt. Fuji and the Izu Peninsula on sunny days, and even the Boso Peninsula on days when the air is clear. The small hill on the mountain side is called “Mio-ga-taira-skoria,” which was called “Akajari” because the east side of the hill was scraped off to reveal a red-burned cross-section of the volcano.

The black gravel beach stretches for about 2 km. The underwater roots formed by the lava flow are spread out on Okubo beach, and it is a diving and snorkeling spot where you can observe many fish. There are also camping facilities along the beach where you can enjoy camping and BBQ.

Akakokko Hall About 30 min.-1 hourIt is a nature observation facility run by Miyake Village and was established in 1993 (Heisei 5) to introduce the nature of Miyakejima to as many people as possible. The Akakokko is a bird with a red belly of about 20 cm in length that can be seen on the Izu Islands. In addition to wild birds, there are also exhibits introducing plants and marine life. Rangers from the Wild Bird Society of Japan are stationed here to provide nature information, hold nature observation meetings, and conduct surveys and research.

It is necessary to proceed approximately 100 meters from the parking lot to the exhibition facility building on a road with a slope of 5-6 degrees. Spot7 Tairoike Pond About 30 min.
The largest freshwater lake on the Izu Islands was formed in a crater about 2,500 years ago. The surrounding forest of shiny-leaved trees is home to a variety of rare wild birds, including the Akakokko and the Iijimamushikui, both of which have been designated National Natural Treasures. On the side of Oji Pond, visitors can see a giant sudajii tree over 600 years old, known as the “maigojii“.

The beautiful coastal scenery can be seen from the boardwalk. You can also observe the geological formations formed by repeated eruptions. It is also a popular diving spot, where visitors can experience the complex topography of the sea floor, including large arches and tunnels caused by volcanic activity. On the seafloor of Togahama, where the Kuroshio Current hits first, there is a colony of table corals that is said to be the most beautiful of the Izu Islands.

Spot9 Seven Islands Observation Deck About 20-30 min.
On a clear day, the observatory commands a panoramic view of the Izu Islands, from Oshima in the north to Hachijojima in the south. In 1983, the first crater opened near here, forming a line of craters that reached the coast and spewed columns of fire like a curtain.

Spot10 Toga Shrine About 20-30 min.
This ancient shrine is the center of shrine worship on Miyakejima. Originally located halfway up Mt. Oyama, the main shrine was destroyed by fire in an eruption, moved to Futashimagayama, and then to its present location.

Nippana Shinzan
These pyroclastic hills were formed overnight in 1983 by the upheaval from the eruption and the scoria that fell during the eruption. The sea side has been cut away, and you can observe the beautiful contrast between the red and black lava and the fault line.

Sanshichi Mountain Observatory
Mount Sanshichi is a hill formed by cinder cones ejected from a fissure eruption that occurred in 1962 (Showa 37). It is called “Mount Sanshichi” (37) after the year in which the eruption occurred. From the observatory at the summit, Mount Hyotan, another cinder cone hill, can be seen.

Shiitori Shrine
One of the twelve Shinto shrines on Miyakejima island, the shrine and torii (gate) were swallowed by a massive mudflow generated by the eruption in 2000. The shrine pavilions and torii were later rebuilt, but the former torii gate remains buried with the top part remaining, which testifies to the severity of the mudflow of the time.
