flat and compact Shikinejima
Niijima and Shikinejima
These islands are located in the northern part of the Izu Islands, about 160 km south of Tokyo.
Niijima and Shikinejima used to be connected to each other, but were separated by a tsunami caused by the Genroku Earthquake (1703) during the Edo period.
Although they are only about 15 minutes apart by ferry, they offer different scenery and different ways to ben enjoyed.

The cove is completely surrounded by rocks. Adjacent to the beach are a parking lot, showers, restrooms, among others. Voted No. 1 in Japan's Beach Cleanliness Ranking for 2023, visitors can feel healing from the sea at the calm Tomari Beach.

Spot4 Yukagen-no-ana Steam Vent About 10 min
This is a square hole in the wall on the way to the Jinata hot springs from the center of the island. This hole is connected to the hot spring source underground, and warm steam comes out of the hole, so it is warm when you put your hand in. The temperature of the water changes with the time of day, so it is doubtful that you can really tell the temperature of the water, but it is located in the path of the Jinata Onsen, so try putting your hand in as you pass by. In winter, the steam rises up and the atmosphere is very much like a hot spring. Even if there is no sign, there are several other natural holes on both sides of the path where the steam comes out.
Accessibility Information
You can put your hand in the hole from the road.

Spot6 Matsugashita Miyabiyu Onsen About 20-30 min
The quality of the spring is the same as that of Jinata Onsen, a natural iron sulfide spring. It was created so that people could easily enjoy the quality of Jinata Onsen. Regardless of the tides, you can bathe at any time of the year at a comfortable water temperature. Changing rooms are conveniently located as soon as you exit the cave. It is recommended to enjoy the footbath even if you do not have a bathing suit. At night, the cave is illuminated and has a very charming atmosphere, but please watch your step. Another benefit is that you can drive close to the baths.

Maehama Beach (Honson Maehama Beach) stretches in front of Honson, the largest village on Niijima, on the west coast of Niijima Village, Tokyo. It is called Honson Maehama Beach to distinguish it from Maehama (Wakago Maehama) in the Wakago district of the northern part of the island. Because of its convenience and environmental friendliness, it was selected as one of the 88 best beaches in Japan by the Ministry of the Environment (only two beaches on the Izu Islands, the Tomari Beach on Shikinejima and the Honson Maehama Beach). A seawall (detached breakwater) has been raised off the coast, so the waves are relatively calm. Restrooms, showers, and other facilities are scattered along the coastal path.
