祖父が愛した奥多摩の魅力を、現代の人たちにも。「奥多摩いろは歌留多」の復刻秘話
The charm of Okutama, loved by my grandfather, for people today. Secret story behind the reprinting of Okutama Iroha-Karuta
昭和の初め、奥多摩地域の魅力を伝えるために制作された「奥多摩いろは歌留多」。地元の人々を中心に愛されたベストセラー商品だったにも関わらず、時代の流れとともに市場から姿を消してしまいました。
The Okutama Iroha-Karuta was produced at the beginning of the Showa period (1926-1989) to convey the charms of the Okutama area. Despite being a best-selling product loved mainly by local people, it disappeared from the market with the passage of time.
そこで、20年程前に先陣を切って復活させたのが羽村伊左雄さん。実は、「奥多摩いろは歌留多」制作者である羽村春市さんの孫にあたります。
It was Isao Hamura who spearheaded the revival of the Karuta some 20 years ago. In fact, he is the grandson of Haruichi Hamura, the creator of Okutama Iroha-Karuta.
復刻のきっかけは、父親の一言
The Revival Sparked by a Father’s Words
ブームが過ぎ去り、入手困難となってしまった頃。羽村伊左雄さんのお父さんは、当時の思い出を求めて歌留多の現物を探し回っていました。そしてある日、親戚の家にあるタンスの中から発見したそう。
When the boom had passed and karuta became difficult to obtain, Isao's father searched around for an original copy of the karuta in search of memories of those days. One day, he found it in a chest of drawers at a relative's house.
「現物を見て、父親が僕に言うんですよ。『これの復刻作業をお願いできないか』と。」（羽村伊左雄さん）

当時、印刷会社でアートディレクターとして働いていた伊左雄さん。お父さんの望みを叶えるべく、一枚一枚、手作業でスキャンしては現像する作業を繰り返したと話します。
At the time, Isao was working as an art director at a printing company. In order to fulfil his father's wishes, he repeated the process of manually scanning and developing each card one by one.
当時の奥多摩を、現代の人々にも伝える
Transmitting the Okutama of those days to the people of today
復刻にあたり、札に描かれた絵や歌の解説書を加えることに。「当時の奥多摩を知らない現代の人たちにも、その魅力を存分に理解してほしい」という思いが強かった伊左雄さん。ことの発起人となったお父さんと、それに力を貸してくれた学芸員の方と3人で一致団結して、丁寧に解説文を作り上げました。
In reprinting the cards, Isao decided to add explanatory notes on the pictures and songs depicted on the cards. He was keen that people of today, who do not know Okutama as it was then, should fully understand the charm of the area. His father, who was the initiator of the project, and the curators who lent their support, worked in unison to carefully create the explanatory text.
そしてついに完成した“復刻版”の「奥多摩いろは歌留多」。平成16年に初版として1000部を印刷し、令和になった今でも地元の方から「懐かしい」と愛されています。
Finally, the ‘reprint’ edition of the Okutama Iroha-karuta was completed. The first edition of 1,000 copies was printed in 2004, and even now, in 2024, the book is loved by local people who say it is nostalgic.

「祖父は、私が生まれる約3年前に亡くなりました。でも、怒るととっても怖い人だったと聞いています」（羽村伊左雄さん）。
'My grandfather passed away about three years before I was born. I hear he was a very scary man when he got angry’ (Isao).
元祖「奥多摩いろは歌留多」の制作者である羽村春市さんについて伺うと、伊左雄さんは目を細めながら語ります。さらに、春市さんのほかに制作に携わった方々について、解説書に記名されていることを教えてくれました。

お気に入りは、羽村の「は」
Favourite is the ‘ha’ in Hamura
西多摩地域の特色や風景の美しさが詠まれている、44枚の絵札。伊左雄さんのお気に入りは、なんと言っても羽村取水堰を描いた「は（羽村の堰は江戸の母）」の札だそう。
The 44 picture cards depicts the characteristics of the Nishitama area and the beauty of the landscape. Isao's favourite is, by far, the ‘Ha’ (Hamura weir is the mother of Edo) card, which depicts the Hamura intake weir.
続いて「こ（金剛寺の梅は 将門の挿木）」という絵札を手に取ると、「この梅が成長して実をつけても、いつまでも青かったことから『青梅』となったんですよ」と一言。この土地への誇りを感じるような、優しい語り口で説明してくれました。
Next, he picked up the ‘Ko’ (The plum tree at Kongoji Temple is the one that Masakado used) tag and said, ‘The name “Oume” comes from the fact that these plums remains green even after they become ripe (“青” = green, “梅” = plum).
最初にいろは歌留多が制作されてから、一世紀の時が経過しようとしています。祖父・羽村春市さんが奥多摩地域にたっぷりと注いだ愛情は、時代を超えてしっかりと受け継がれ、さらに次の世代へと繋いでいくことでしょう。
A century has passed since Iroha-Karuta was first produced. The love that his grandfather, Haruichi, lavished on the Okutama region has been passed down through the ages and will be passed on to the next generation.
